Oedipus Rex
New Palace Opera is excited to present Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, his enthralling and magisterial operatic dramatisation of the Oedipus myth, mercilessly tracking Oedipus’ journey towards tragedy. Oedipus Rex is Stravinsky’s opera-oratorio premiered in 1927 in Paris in collaboration with Jean Cocteau, who wrote the libretto. The narration is to be spoken in the audience’s native language, so our audience will enjoy the added insight that this will provide.
Mahler’s Totenfeier (Funeral Rites) is a symphonic poem by the young composer, detailing in passionate detail the regrets of the hero’s life-long striving. It was eventually recast as the first movement of his second symphony.
The American composer George Templeton Strong (1856–1948) made Switzerland his home, near to his beloved Germany. ‘At Sunset’ (Bei Sonnenuntergang) is the first of four symphonic poems of Die Nacht from 1913 , and much championed by Toscanini. If you enjoy Richard Strauss and lush romanticism, this is one for you.
