Jenufa
Leos Janacek: Jenufa
Concert performance: 6.30pm, Sunday 27 June 2027, St John’s Waterloo, London SE1 8TY
After our first foray into the the work of Janacek with Katya Kabanova last summer, we return to Janacek to present his first operatic masterpiece Jenufa.
Jenufa is compelling for its combination of raw drama, intricate characterisation, innovative music and historical significance, making it a profound and enduring work in the operatic canon that has achieved great popularity with the opera-going public in the last decades.
New Palace Opera is also delighted that we are being joined by Philippa Boyle to sing the title role, returning to us having sung the title role of Katya and Ellen Orford in our Peter Grimes. In this latter role, she was widely commended, including Bachtrack declaring that “Philippa Boyle was clear and precise throughout, and dealt faultlessly with some vocally tricky interactions with Grimes. Her Embroidery aria, was an absolute gem.”
This concert performance will be sung in English, with a translation by Edward Downes.
